A Note about the Cancellation of the 2020 ISSRM in Cairns Australia

March 11th, when we made the decision to cancel the 2020 ISSRM, feels like another era now. Naturally we were devastated to cancel what was shaping up to be a fantastic conference. So many people had worked hard to making it a success and we thank all of you. However, even before travel restrictions were announced and cases of COVID-19 accelerated, we knew that it was paramount to focus on the safety of society members and ethical to give people as much notice as possible to manage travel implications. Looking forward, we hope there will be another opportunity for the conference to come to Australia. In the meantime we wish the organisers of the virtual conference our best wishes and we hope to see you at a future ISSRM in person when the time is right.
2020 ISSRM – Virtual Conference
Each year we gather at our annual ISSRM to share research, reconnect with colleagues, and make new connections. Because we cannot meet in person this year, we are hosting a virtual conference. We are planning a series of workshops, paper sessions, a poster session, a student forum, and a mentorship activity. Workshops and paper presentations will be pre-recorded and available for viewing at any time during the conference dates. Set times will be scheduled for live question and answer sessions. Discussions will continue on message forums throughout the conference.
We have accepted over 200 abstract submissions and over 20 organized sessions, workshops, and panels!
Although the deadline for session proposals and abstract submission has passed, we are still accepting late submissions on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Jessica Hill ([email protected]) if you have a late submission request or if you have any questions.

Due to the cancellation of ISSRM 2020 in Cairns, Australia, the requirements for the Best Student Paper Award Competition have been revised. In order to give more time to adjust, student abstracts are now due June 1st, and completed papers are due by July 1st. 2021 ISSRM – Portland, Oregon
We are very excited to welcome ISSRM to Portland, the City of Roses, in June 2021! Oregon is home to some of the most diverse landscapes in the United States, with high desert country to the east, Pacific coastline to the west, and mountains, rivers and forests in between. From water management to old growth forests, this region has experienced a multitude of resource management challenges and experimented with novel policy solutions. It’s a perfect venue for ISSRM.
The conference is co-hosted by Oregon State University and Portland State University and will be held on the campus of PSU. Located in downtown Portland, PSU offers affordable housing on campus, as well as at local hotels or homeshares. The entire Portland area is easily accessible via MAX light rail, and June brings the start of “festival season” in the city. Portland has more than 275 public parks and gardens –all worth exploring. There are many historic neighborhoods, and downtown features plenty of museums, theaters, restaurants, and shops. You’ll find the nearby Pearl District is home to galleries, boutiques, chic restaurants and the legendary Powell’s City of Books. See Travel Portland for attractions and seasonal events.
With endless outdoor recreation opportunities, arts and cultural attractions – not to mention the Willamette Valley wine country and some of the top rated breweries in the nation — there are endless opportunities to explore. Stay before or after the conference, and visit Travel Oregon to plan your trip!

2022 ISSRM – San José, Costa Rica
Planning is underway for ISSRM 2022. The conference theme is “Sustainable Development in Practice: Integrating People, Place, and Policy.” This conference will be hosted by the University of Costa Rica (UCR), Texas A&M University, and the University of Georgia and will take place at the UCR campus in San José, Costa Rica.
This will be the first ISSRM in Latin America and will provide opportunities to expand IASNR’s global network and to showcase the accomplishments of a country on the leading edge of socially responsible conservation and sustainable development.
An IASNR delegation visited San José in January to tour UCR’s impressive conference facilities and begin the process of logistics planning. Please contact Dr. David Matarrita-Cascante, Dr. Jesse Abrams, or Jessica Hill for more information.
