Our Hubs
IASNR has established regional hubs open to individuals with interdisciplinary interests across the social and natural sciences. Anyone is invited to join a hub. Each IASNR Hub is coordinated by a Hub Executive Committee. Hubs have their own governing procedures connected to the following overarching hub objectives:
- bring together members and potential members working in the region;
- facilitate sharing of knowledge, research perspectives and policy considerations among members and potential members;
- promote diversity, equity and inclusion among members and potential members;
- encourage and support members and potential members to present their work in scientific meetings, seminars/webinars, online and face-to-face conferences to be held in the region as well as at IASNR conferences.
IASNR European Hub
Vision and Mission
Our mission is to foster collaborations among researchers across Europe working at the intersection of society and nature, contributing together to a just preservation and transformation of our environments. To achieve this, the European hub provides a platform where IASNR members and those interested in getting to know the association can meet, exchange ideas, and explore collaboration opportunities. We are thriving for an inclusive community that supports early career researchers.
Main research themes
- environmental and landscape management, e.g. climate change adaptation and mitigation, restoration, (regenerative) agricultural practices, ecosystem and wildlife conservation, rewilding
- research on place relations and values, e.g. nature’s contribution to people, ecosystem services, senses of place, environmental stewardship, human-nature connection
- environmental policy and governance, e.g. stakeholder engagement, citizens science, environmental justice, environmental activism
- outdoor recreation, e.g. nature and wildlife tourism
- social-ecological systems transformation, e.g. energy transition, transdisciplinary research, justice, knowledge brokerage
Ethics
Respectful and ethical conduct is critical to support the continuation of the development of the European hub of the IASNR by fostering a welcoming environment for all members. To the IASNR members applies the code of Ethics (please see: https://www5.iasnr.org/iasnr-ethics/).
Executive board
The executive board consists of three IASNR EH members. We try to account for diversity in terms of gender, geographic distribution, and career stage. Next election will be held during the business meeting at the in-person IASNR-EH conference in Krakow in 2025 (see below). Current board members are:
- Dr Iga Kołodyńska (research assistant at the Institute of Spatial Management, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences)
- Dr Sarah Gottwald (Postdoctoral researcher @Social-Ecolgical Systems Institute, Leuphana University)
- Dr hab. Krzysztof Niedziałkowski (Profesor IFiS PAN/ Associate Professor, Instytut Filozofii i Socjologii, Polish Academy of Sciences)

3rd in-person IASNR EH meeting @ Jagiellonian University Krakow, Poland, Sept 11-12 2025
The European Chapter of IASNR is now inviting colleagues across Europe to submit proposals for organized sessions and/or individual abstracts for the third conference of the European Chapter of IASNR at Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The event is co-organized together with Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, and Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw.
The aim of the conference is to share and discuss our research around various topics at the interface between social and environmental science, and to further develop our community. Different formats, such as round-tables and outdoor sessions facilitate exchange and collaboration efforts.
The organization and facilitation of the conference is driven by the familiar and welcoming spirit of the hub and strong endeavors for sustainability. Given that this is a rather informal conference, no registration fee is required, and all lunches and dinners are self-paid.
