The 2021 calendar year (Vol.34 of the journal), is the first full year of Kristin Floress and Emily S. Huff’s appointment as Editors-in-Chief. As of June, 2021, 6 issues of Vol.34 (2021) have been published online.
The Editors-in-Chief greatly appreciate the strong, supportive role SNR‘s Book Review Editors Claudia Benham (James Cook University, Townsville, Australia) and Laura Verbrugge (University of Aalto, Espoo, Finland) and SNR’s Associate Editors play in the editorial review process. The Editors-in-Chief also wish to thank all Editorial Board Members for their invaluable, ongoing contribution in the review process of manuscripts submitted to SNR. The number of manuscripts submitted annually to SNR has revealed an overall increasing trend over the past decade. The contributions of past and current Editorial Board Members and Editors-in-Chiefs have substantially decreased the time from submission to decision from 112 days in 2010 for original submissions and 91 days for revised submissions, to 26 days for original submissions and 43 days for revised submissions. The contributions of the Editorial Board have also helped increased the journal’s impact factor to 1.813 and helped encourage and broaden international submissions. We have nearly doubled the number of countries that submit papers to SNR, from 34 in 2009 to 66 in 2020.

SNR Special Issues
The Editors-in-Chief are pleased to announce that two special issue proposals have been accepted:
Human Dimensions of Air Quality. Guest Editors include Chris Zajchowski (Old Dominion University), Jörg Königstorfer (Technical University of Munich), and Mary Mostafanezhad (University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa). Click here to view the call for papers.

Open Call for Special Issue Proposals
The Editors in Chief of Society and Natural Resources would like to invite scholars to submit proposals for a Special Issue. Topics of particular interest are:

- Urban systems
If you are interested in serving as an SNR Guest Editor for a Special Issue, please submit the following in one PDF:
- Proposed title
- Guest Editorial Team (2-3 people)
- Special Issue abstract
- Timeline (note that the timeline should end with ‘paper submission to SNR’ as the timeline from there will follow the normal journal process)
Summer Reading? Review a Book for SNR!
Have you recently read a book that would be of interest to the IASNR community? Are you interested in discovering new books?
We invite you to consider writing a short review for SNR. Book reviews are generally less than 1000 words, and the format is flexible – we love creative submissions!
Reviews should be written by scholars or practitioners holding a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a related field, and without biases or conflicts of interest with respect to the subject of the review.
Currently we have books/media available for review on topics such as the Anthropocene and extractivism (click below to see a list of books). If there’s a book you’d like to review, please get in touch and we can organise a copy for you.

Rabel J. Burdge & Donald R. Field Outstanding Article Award for SNR Volume 33 (2020)
Society & Natural Resources organizes a committee to review nominations and select a winner for the Rabel J. Burdge and Donald R. Field Outstanding Article Award, for best general research article published in each volume of the journal. The award recipient receives a US $500 cash prize (split evenly between co-authors), sponsored by the journal’s publisher, Taylor & Francis, and is recognized at the IASNR Conference (formerly ISSRM) in June each year; and through the journal and related websites.
The Editors and Editorial Board of Society & Natural Resources are excited to announce the winner of SNR’s “Rabel J. Burdge and Donald R. Field Outstanding Article Award” for papers published in 2020!
Abstract: Indigenous and Local Ecological Knowledge (ILEK) has been recognized for its potential and contribution to sustainable use of natural resources. It has proven difficult, however, to investigate and observe its tacit and embodied character. The objective of this article is to explore ways in which we can theoretically and methodologically understand ILEK. It does so by theorizing ILEK as craftsmanship using literature on practice theory, and analyzing the tacit and embodied nature of craftsmanship of a Sámi craftswoman and an archipelago fisherman through the use of visual methods. Results of this study are used to analyze and discuss how craftsmanship reproduces ILEK and its potential to contribute to environmental sustainability.
The winning article, judged the best general research article in SNR in 2020, is by Viveca Mellegård & Wiebren J. Boonstra, for their SNR 33(10) article ” Craftsmanship as a Carrier of Indigenous and Local Ecological Knowledge: Photographic Insights from Sámi Duodji and Archipelago Fishing.” This award is supported with a $500 cash prize by SNR’s publisher, Taylor & Francis.
Mellegård and Boonstra’s article was selected through a competitive process by Society & Natural Resources’ former Editor-in-Chief, Linda S. Prokopy and SNR Editorial Board members Cynthia Caron (Clark University, USA), Trevor Hill (University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), and H.M. Tuihedur Rahman (McGill University, Canada). The Paper Award Committee judged Mellegård and Boonstra’s article SNR’s “Outstanding Article” of 2020, for its innovative and meaningful contribution to the study of society and natural resources and its promise to be influential over time. This article will also be open access for three months.
Mellegård and Boonstra will be formally recognized at the IASNR Business Meeting during the 2021 Virtual IASNR Conference (formerly ISSRM), June 20–24, 2021, and on the IASNR website and social media pages.
