Tanya Howard is Senior Cultural Scientist in the Environment, Energy & Science Division of NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. Tanya completed her PhD at the University of New England, NSW, in 2015 and her research explored participatory processes in the environmental governance of rural landscapes and capacity building in rural communities. Between 2015-2018 Tanya worked with Professor Ted Alter from Pennsylvania State University on a large externally funded project investigating collective action in invasive species management. Prior to entering academia, Tanya worked with rural and remote communities to develop and deliver quality natural resource management and environmental sustainability outcomes across the non-government and government sectors. She was awarded an Australia Day Environmental Citizen (local government) honour in 2021.
Tanya is Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of New England and an alumnus of the Kettering Foundation in the USA. Tanya is passionate about the role of authentic and honest communication, deliberative practices and community participation in the pursuit of environmental and social justice.
